Business travel insurance

What business travel insurance covers when you or your staff fall ill, get hurt or lose luggage on a work trip, and how it compares with the travel cover on your card.
Business travel insurance helps you and your staff if something goes wrong on a work trip. It pays for medical care, getting home and travel costs if someone falls ill or is injured, and it pays for lost luggage and delays. It usually applies both abroad and on trips within Sweden, and it can often be added to a business insurance policy.
How business travel insurance works
- Something happens on the trip. Someone falls ill at a trade fair, gets hurt at a client meeting or has their luggage stolen.
- You call the policy's emergency assistance line. Most business travel policies have one that answers around the clock. It helps find care and arranges the journey home if needed. The number is in the policy document.
- The insurance pays. Care and transport are often paid directly. Other costs you pay yourself and send the receipts to the insurer.
- The costs are reimbursed. The insurance pays what is covered, up to the amounts in the policy terms.
What it covers
Medical care and getting home
The cost of doctors, hospital and medicine, and of getting home if needed. That includes an air ambulance when one is required.
Accidents
Compensation if the traveller is left with a permanent injury after an accident on the trip.
Luggage and delays
Compensation for luggage that is stolen, damaged or delayed, and for costs when a trip is delayed or cut short.
Liability and legal protection
If the traveller causes damage or ends up in a dispute during the trip. Some business travel policies include this.
What is not usually covered
- Private trips. The insurance applies to work travel. If a private holiday is added to a work trip, there may be limits.
- Existing conditions. A known illness that gets worse during the trip is often only covered to a limited extent.
- Travel against official advice. If someone travels to a country the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs advises against visiting, the cover can be limited.
- Company equipment. Computers and other equipment taken on the trip may have their own cap, or be covered by property insurance instead.
Who needs business travel insurance?
Every company where you or your staff travel for work benefits from it, especially abroad. It matters most to consultants who work at client sites in other towns, and to companies with salespeople and technicians who travel often. It can be relevant to consultants, IT consultants and advertising and communications agencies.
How much does it cost?
The premium usually depends on how many people travel, how often and where. Some policies are priced per employee per year, others per trip. For more on pricing, see how much business insurance costs.
Example: The fall at the trade fair. A salesperson slips on the hotel stairs during a trade fair in Barcelona and breaks her wrist. She needs surgery on the spot, and her flight home has to be rebooked. Business travel insurance pays for the hospital and the new flight home, and the assistance line helps arrange both.
Frequently asked questions
Is the travel cover on the company card enough?
It depends on the card. Many corporate cards include travel cover when the trip is paid with the card, but the amounts and what is included differ from business travel insurance. If you have both, the same thing may be insured twice. Compare the terms before you choose.
Does business travel insurance apply in Sweden?
Often, but it depends on the policy terms. Some policies only cover trips abroad, or trips within Sweden that include an overnight stay.
Does it cover consultants working at a client abroad for a long time?
It depends on how long. The policy usually has a maximum length per trip, set out in the terms. A longer assignment may need a different policy.
